Is it a Big Postal Announcement, a Big Meeting, or is it faster than a speeding train ...no, it's a Hearing on the Impact of the Economic Crisis on the U.S. Postal Service [see screen capture of the press release below]. The rumors of a big meeting/announcement have been floating around the internet for a couple of weeks now. Those rumors have come to fruition as of today. The hearing is set to examine how the current financial crisis is hurting business at the U.S. Postal Service, Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) will hold the hearing at 2:30 p.m. today, Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, in his Subcommittee on Federal Financial Management, Government Information, Federal Services and International Security. The central focus of the hearing will be to examine how changes in the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act (PAEA) could improve Postal Service operations so it can better weather the current economic downturn.

Talk around the coffee pot and on workroom floors across the nation are concentrated on scenarios taking place during the hearing that would additionally focus on five day delivery, the universal service obligation, workforce reductions that are more employee-friendly, consolidations, Voluntary Separation Incentive Payments, and an emergency rate increase.
